Vegans do not consume any animal products. But why is that? Here you will discover the five most compelling arguments for a vegan lifestyle!
Almost everyone has at least one vegan friend or acquaintance. Vegans are people who do not consume any animal products. It becomes very annoying for bystanders if he or she abstains from even specific beverages. If one inquires more, it will be discovered that certain wines, juices, and CO. containing gelatin are cleared. That often comes as a surprise, and the question of what one could eat or drink at that point arises.
But against the general conception vegan living humans do not nourish themselves only from salad and water! Most of them have adapted their diet and lifestyle perfectly and usually know all about a balanced diet and foods without animal ingredients. And their reasons for this form of nutrition are quite plausible - or at least thought-provoking!
1. Aspects of health
Avoiding meat has some health benefits, including lowering cholesterol levels. Furthermore, eliminating animal products from one's diet lowers the risk of obesity, diabetes, and arthritis.
It also avoids all of the harmful byproducts that can be ingested through the consumption of animal foods: Because it is no longer a secret that conventional agriculture, particularly factory farming, leaves antibiotics in the meat, pesticides in the honey, or polluted eggs - from which, unfortunately, even organic food is not always free.
2. a reduction in animal suffering
Male chicks shredded alive shortly after hatching, calves separated from their mothers shortly after birth, or a large number of chickens forced to share a single square meter - the list is nearly endless and demonstrates the worst effects of our consumer economy, whose principles prioritize quantity over quality. Even if you buy organic products and support local agriculture, there are still plenty of foods on the market that contain animal products in some form. Unfortunately, the extraction of these compounds frequently results in significant animal suffering. To avoid this, the most consistent conclusion is to eliminate all animal products and eat a vegan diet.
3. environmental considerations
Animal husbandry not only uses a lot of water but also contributes to the greenhouse effect and soil degradation. The reasons are self-evident: animals must be watered and fed, and feed requires regular irrigation during cultivation, resulting in extremely high water consumption in animal agriculture. The warming impact is compounded by the gas methane, which is 25 times more strong than CO2 and is generated by cows. Last but not least, vast swaths of rainforest are razed to make way for grassland or livestock feed.
4. livestock farming exacerbates world hunger.
Corn, grains, and soy are fed to millions of farm animals, only to end up on our plates in the form of a few steaks. The thinking is therefore simple: why not use the plant foods grown directly to feed people, when over 800 million people worldwide suffer from hunger?
What you eat determines who you are.
Vegans, for the most part, pay close attention to their nutrition. Fast food and convenience products frequently contain milk powder, egg, or additives with E-numbers derived from animal products, making it difficult to grab anything quickly. Freshly prepared food and an examination of the ingredient list are thus the foreign currency for vegans. This has the pleasant side effect of causing them to be more attentive to their eating habits, consuming less prepackaged food, and generally knowing what they are eating.
Living vegan - but what about B12?
Admittedly, the switch to a vegan diet requires some research, effort, and time - but the reasons are obvious. And for those who now cite B12 deficiency as a counter-argument, vitamin B12 can also be taken without any problems via dietary supplements. In fact, B12 is the only vitamin that is not present in a purely plant-based diet, and its deficiency can lead to health problems. Regular monitoring is therefore essential.
Living vegan can therefore not only have a positive effect on health and the environment, but it also avoids animal suffering and raises awareness of one's own diet. Nevertheless, a varied diet and knowledge of the various nutrients are the be-all and end-all of a vegan lifestyle. If the conversion to purely vegan nutrition is too drastic for you thereby, you do already something good, if you reduce animal products clearly and look around for all the vegetable, leckeren alternatives. And it's even really fun because seitan, tempeh, and jackfruit open up completely new flavors and interesting cooking recipes. Give it a try!
