A blocked nose is frequently one of the first indicators of a cold. What causes a blocked nose, and how can we get rid of the mucus that has become stuck?

I've got a cold again! Coughing and hoarseness are common, but the nose is frequently blocked, especially at the start of an infection. This is especially annoying when we want to sleep but can't because it prevents many people from getting a good night's sleep.

What are the reasons for this?

A cold, on the other hand, isn't the main cause of the symptoms. A stuffy nose and irritated mucous membranes can also be caused by the following factors:

  • Allergies (allergens include hay fever or animal dander).
  • Sinusitis
  • The nasal septum that is crooked
  • Intolerance to certain foods (for example gluten and lactose intolerance)
  • Polyps
  • Smoking

Is your nose blocked? This is beneficial!

Decongestant nasal sprays (e.g., oxymetazoline or xylometazoline) can be helpful in the short term, but they should not be taken for more than five days or the nasal mucosa will be damaged. You should only use nasal drops two or three times per day. A nasal spray without preservatives is, by the way, more acceptable.

Our noses benefit from home remedies, and they also help us fight colds (rhinitis).

Nasal irrigation with saline solution can wash bacteria out as an alternative to nasal spray. Fill a nasal douche with warm salt water to perform this (half a teaspoon of salt to a quart of water). Place one nostril in one nostril and lean over the sink at an angle. The water will enter through one nostril and exit through the other. However, the following solutions can also help:

  • Using salt or therapeutic plants like chamomile blossoms to inhale.
  • Cold-fighting soup: Boil a ginger bulb in 0.5 liters of water, then add two tablespoons of grated horseradish, honey, lime juice, marjoram, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Drizzle 3 drops each of mint and clove oil on a handkerchief and place it next to your pillow at night to relax the mucous membrane.

By the way, home treatments for colds, coughs, fevers, and sore throats can all help alleviate the agony! If you have a dry nose, this article may be of assistance. Also, we'll show you how to stop nosebleeds.
