الرئيسية/RECIPES / Good Friday lunch: We enjoy these recipes
On Good Friday, many people eat vegetarian dishes or fish because they are fasting. We present delicious recipes for your Good Friday dinner!
What can you eat on Good Friday?
Faithful Christians do not eat meat on Good Friday, which is part of Lent before Easter. For this reason, many people switch to fish on this day - in addition, the fish is a symbol of Christianity and therefore goes well with the holiday. Recipes with salmon, trout or cod are popular, for example. But light, vegetarian dishes - for example with eggs or seasonal ingredients such as asparagus - are also suitable for Good Friday meals. In the picture gallery, we have put together some recipes for you.
Why is meat avoided on Good Friday dinner?
Meat used to be served only on happy occasions because it was a very expensive food. However, since Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and the day is understood as a day of fasting and abstinence, eating meat is eliminated. Nowadays the Catholic Church is no longer so strict with its food regulations and makes exceptions for sick people, for example. As a so-called silent holiday, Good Friday is also subject to some legal restrictions, for example, there is a ban on dancing, but this is enforced differently from state to state.
Typical Good Friday dinner
Depending on the region, there are various traditional recipes for Good Friday in Germany. These include eggs in green sauce or pickled salmon. Straw is often found in the Münsterland: these are thick, pancake-like dough pieces made from yeast and containing raisins. They keep you full for a long time and are therefore ideal for Lent.
In general, you can't go wrong if you eat meat-free on Good Friday and instead opt for light dishes. Lent ends on Holy Saturday and you can reward yourself with a delicious Easter meal for your patience.
